CPC 9.25 Oil Drip

Recommended Posts

Just got my CPC out and discovered the baffle lubricant has separated, flowed down the baffle tube and pooled on the inside of the corrector - a known issue I believe. After a closer inspection with a torch the corrector, primary, secondary and baffle tube require cleaning, so a complete strip down is required. I would normally take something like this on myself but my house is like a building site at the moment with dust everywhere so can anybody recommend a 'trusted' specialist who can do a full service. I live on the Lincolnshire / South Yorkshire boundary.

They are good but I think they are down around the south coast area.

Someone took a refractor there for collimation (FenlandPaul ????) so they may come along and be able to give more exact location. Did think it was on the website at one time.

What you may find is you can take it there and wait while he does it if the time expected is not too long. However I suspect a strip down, clean regrease, assembly and collimation is not going to be a matter of 2 or 3 hours.

Hello Astro Fan. I could do this for you, I'm in W Yorkshire so nearer than Kent. I used to have agencies for Meade and Celestron for SCT's and have stripped some down for various problems. Although your type of problem has happened in the past it is rare and not expected unless the OTA has been subjected to a warm environment. A good reason not to store a SCT with the corrector facing downwards. Have you had the telescope from new or is it possible that the baffle tube has been regreased with an unsuitable material?

Thanks for your reply Peter - I purchased the scope about six years ago when it was about 2 months old. The corrector has never been off and only lightly dusted from time to time, no other part of the scope has ever been off or lubricated. It was OK until I recently moved to a new house that is being renovated and the dust has finally got to it, and possible left by a sunny window although it is always covered. The scope has been first class until now but needs a good service. You're thoughts please - Guy
