Best collimation tool for a Mak & SCT?

Recommended Posts

As many of you are aware, I posted a post sometime ago about my 'modded' ETX105 and sourced a local engineering workshop to fabricate a replacement back for it to my design. I really would like to know is what is the best collimation tool for a Mak & SCT?

I do have 2x collimation caps and a laser collimator.  I am now thinking of purchasing a Cheshire collimator. If I go for a Cheshire collimator, do I need a long one or a short one? Maybe I am being paranoid about collimation as it 'appears' OK visually using the caps and, but unsure with the laser!

I found this in AstroBoot... (with description)

3-pc Expert collimation tool set

New items. Another AstroBoot exclusive. The ultimate collimation tool set! This classic 3-piece tool set was originally manufactured and popularised in the USA by Tectron Telescopes. The version we are offering here is an exact copy made by a German company. And they are perfect high-quality copies of the Tectron originals - with everything but the engraved name! The set comprises the three ideal tools for perfect Newtonian and refractor collimation and includes: 1) Sight tube 2) Cheshire and 3) Autocollimator. The Sight Tube (longest tube with cross hairs) --The basic mechanical alignment tool for Newtonian telescopes. This tool is necessary for placing the diagonal mirror in the proper place, and aiming the diagonal mirror at the center of the primary. Cheshire (the tube on the left with side window) -- Once your diagonal is in the proper place, you are ready for the Cheshire. This tool is probably one of the most used tools of the set. It is used for very close collimating the primary on a Newtonian, either in the daylight or in complete darkness, for those times when you don't set up till late. Simply shine your red flashlight into the opening. Also used for refractor collimation. Autocollimator (shortest tube - on right) -- The collimator has a mirror with a clear glass part in the centre. This is the final step for collimating your Newtonian. Don't try to use it without first going through the proper steps with the Sight Tube and Cheshire. It won't work! The collimation has to be close to begin with or this tool will frustrate you because it is so critical. Tectron stopped making their tool set in 1997 when Tom Clark retired. Now you can get this highly regarded set of collimation tools at a stunning AstroBoot price! We have a limited number of these sets available and the German company is no longer making them - when they're gone, you're gonzo. Basic operation notes included but good resources available online for the detailed use of these tools.

Also, is this good value for the price?

I dont think cheshires will work as there is no centre spot on the mirror, if you google daytime collimation you should find a web page showing how to set these scopes up roughly, then a case of star test and tweak
