Just moved from London to Upton Pyne just outside Exeter. Wow it's dark up here!

Wondering what is going on in the area, reading other posts about the Norman Lockyer Observatory meet up on Fridays, I think I will have to give that a go!

You have NLO, also there is listed a club at Tiverton and another at Torbay.

Not sure if Tiverton are still active, they may have changed name also, or changed from something to Tiverton.

I have the idea that just inside the Exmoor Park that some astronomical events are held, James may have a better idea but people ask for help at it occasionally. Might be at Wimbleball Lake, not exactly sure. Apparently it is dark also.

Seems to be several SGL people around you, so might be worth asking and I half suggest a meeting not for observing say coffee. I suppose centre of Exeter is the obvious at a suitable eatery/coffee place. There was someone that moved into the centre that has been quiet for some time. Suppose Exeter is the sensible one as people can hop on a train if they do not drive also avoids Exeter traffic and parking.

Coffee sounds a good idea, would love to meet some people who can help me find my way around the skies. I've got a Dob so need to do it all manually.  ust been looking on NLO website, I think there is a meet tonight, do you just rock up and say hello?

The NLO is a very friendly place, and welcomes visitors/newbies. It's easy to just go along on Friday evenings and see what's going on, and meet folk. Starts around 7pm-ish, with a structured talk at 8.30pm by one of the more senior members. Observers (visual scopes) and imagers are both there.

PM me if either of you want to meet up and talk astro stuff.

Great, some local people. How about meeting in Exeter for breakfast or lunch at some point soon?  Or actually there's a great place in Honiton for breakfast, I'm off there this morning.

As someone very new to this it would be good to have someone who I can ask very dumb questions.

Yes, I'll possibly be there as well this Friday night (28th Nov).

New folk are very welcome to come along for a few weeks as guests each Friday night to see what goes on at the NLO. You can then decide afterwards if you wish to take up membership or not; alternatively if you know quickly that you want to join, then membership can be arranged - it's only a small fee and excellent value.
