Missing picture elements?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering whether someone could assist me with an image of The Eagle Nebula.

I have downloaded a trial of Gradient X Terminator from RC Astro and used it to reasonable effect to reduce quite a lot of gradient with the filter.

However when I save the image and view it out of Adobe Photoshop it simply displays the part of the Nebula I excluded from the Gradient filter?

If I go back into Adobe Photoshop the image is fully displayed, what step am I missing?
I am saving the file as a TIFF file.

Thanks

Save a second copy of the image, on the copy image try flattening the layers in PS?

Not sure why it should do what's it's doing, but flattening might be a temporary solution.

Do this on a copy, in case there is something special happening on the original that I'm unaware of.

Thanks for the advice but still no luck. Tried flattening, merging. Creating new background copy still the same.

When I open PS and look for the picture it shows within the file open box the cut out of the nebula is there as well  and yet when I open the file it opens to the full image.

It must be something I am doing in the steps but I am really not deviating far from what I would regard as standard processing. Still very new to PS steep learning curve...

Saving as a TIFF means that it includes the layer information. If you are saving the final image as a tiff then you need to deselect the "include layers" in the save dialogue box. PS will force you to save it as a "copy" to prevent overwriting the file that contains the layers.

The layers and selection areas are contained as an alpha channel and for some reason TIFFs display them, blanking out non-selected parts of the image

I've had the same thing happen to me... As long as you do all your processing and handling in PS, then export to jpg when finished, you'll be fine (I was with my images I had this happen to ;)).

Thanks everyone.

Ok I saved it as a .png file and this worked.

As for TIFF I cannot see a 'Save Layers' there is a 'Layers' tick box but it is greyed out?

Tried to export as a JPG but my export option only gives 'Path to Illustrator', Send Video and Video Preview.

I am using the CS2 version from Adobe so maybe I don't have some of these options. Anyway I am pleased I have at least got a proper copy of the file now as a .png file type.

Also thanks Ant for the offer I may take you up on that but its a very crude image, just testing really. Will have another crack from the beginning now I know I can at least have a result at the end!

Once again thanks all.

Thanks jgs001.

When I click Save As I do not get the JPG file option however if I select Save for Web then that takes me into another application where I can select JPG. Its a bit of fiddle all I want to do is save the file as a JPG! But I guess there is a reason. JPG being highly compressed is one of them I suspect.

Anyway that's it all sorted now. Thanks as always for everyone excellent suggestions and help!

Yes..its the "Layers" tick that you clear (only enabled if the image contains layers). If the image contains any selection data (as it will if you are using gradient Xterminator correctly) then these are contained in alpha layers. For some reason, TIFF files display the alpha layers.

I normally save my Works in Progress as PSD files. That seems to work better for me.
