And app wise. The most used I have is star walk but when I want more detailed objects I jump to the £27 star safari (which with the right adapter can also move a scope through goto)

the only real difference between the sky safari pricesis the maps, the more expensive the bigger the map (star walk i found slightly easier to use than SS but the £9.99 SS is the same maps as SW)

each app will have its own red light mode but also dim the iphone to as low as it will go as it will still dazzle you on RLM

i was on my phone when i posted the last one

http://www.scopesnskies.com/prod/binocular/iphone-binocular-holder.html is the one i was thinking about but looks out of stock

Ive downloaded the free SkEye app which does this, i havent had chance to use it but you fix it to the scope and do a one star align and hey presto you have a push to set up.

Ive bought a cheap universal holder from the petrol station for 4.99 and ill modify that to fit to the tube somehow.

As these apps use the inbuilt compass they need to be fitted in a way that the scope tube, if steel, doesnt affect them and this app gives a warning if it detects an unusual magnetic field.

The only bug is I think its only available on Android but You'd have to check,

There is a video on youtube of a tablet using this on a scope

Astronymonkey.

I am currently in the process of experimenting with a smartphone "push to app" - which I will eventually be attaching to my 10" Newt.

Currently the phone is mounted on my grab and go Opticstar AR80S using a DIY wooden block (covered in black flock for effect!!) and a car smartphone windscreen mount.

It will also fit on my MAK 127 and Orion ED 80.

The app is SKeye:-

Daylight experiments seem to indicate that the "push to" aspects of the app should work quite well - provided the smartphone's magnetometer has been properly calibrated and the phone is not influenced by a steel tubed scope.

The app's instructions can be found on:-

With suggested fittings to a scope on:-

I have attached some photos of my mounting system.

have been in contact with the developer to discuss some possible fine tuning ideas and he is very enthusiatic about the app and its potential.

There is a feedback / voting for ideas forum on:-

The app should be of great interest to dob users and I think is worthy of support.

I am now awaiting some clear skies to give the app a trial - if anyone else has any experience of using the app perhaps they can add their comments.

Thanks for that , I may order one of those universal mounts , as I can't find anything else , Does it stick on with sticky pads or suction ? I don't want to drill any holes in my 8dob

The mount is basically a suction pad but it comes with a self adhesive disc which I attached to a DIY pedestal which fits into the Skywatcher finder shoe. The holder then attaches to the disc.

On my Newt I was able to detatch the smartphone "gripper" part of the mount and attach it to the tube with velcro. - I have yet to test it but it should work. (BTW my tube is aluminium so no magnetic issues.)

Good luck!!
