Do I have to Polar align?

Recommended Posts

I'm using a 250px Dob and haven't tried to Polar align it yet. I heard that I don't really need to with this type of telescope, is that definitely the case?

Clear skies this eve! woo! :icon_eek:

A dobsonian mount works in altitude and azimuth which bear no relation to the pole star and rotation of the heavens around it. So polar alignment isn't required.

An equatorial mount on the other hand works in right ascension and declination which are directly related to the pole star and position on earth. Polar alignment enables it to use the rotation of the earth to track objects in a single plane only - right ascension. :icon_eek:
