Whoops...............i should have stated that. I'd hate for someone to think it was perfectly ok to look at the sun through a scope with just the middle of the lens cap removed.

Just reading the answer above ^^^^ that could make it sound like all you need to do to solar observe is to remove it. It is not.

YOU MUST ALWAYS USE PROPER SOLAR FILTERS, THEY MAY OR MAY NOT COME IN MORE CONVENIENT SIZES TO FIT THE SMALLER HOLE.

I asked the exact same question on a different thread only a few days ago. The other useful reason I was told was as a way of dimming the moon when it is full - also note that when removed it fits onto the other cap-like thing next to it for safe storage.
