Basically what you are doing is setting up the polar scope for a know position. As at the 3pm position you wouldn't know of the NCP is to the left or right of Polaris's position, the transit is used (highest point). Once this is set then it's a simple matter of matching the date on the date disk, to the time on the RA and then place polaris in the little circle on the orbital mark.

Thank the stars. I finally get it. Cheers for that Malc. I've read, watched loads of stuff and did'nt know why I was doing it. Now I know why its clicked. I was the same with fractions at school, and algebra!
