Is there a difference?

Recommended Posts

Noticed one of our members selling a Meade LXD75 'scope' just wondered if there is a major difference between that and a Skywatcher Explorer 200p reflector which i own? ie difference between a SCT and a reflector in power if thats the word i'm looking for.

More curiosity than anything as there is no way "she who must be obeyed" would allow it...yet :) and no way of collecting even if she did :)

The SCT is a compact, short tube version of a reflector. The optics involve a correcting lens at the front of the tube and you look into the rear of the OTA.

Unfortunately all the SCT designs are very long focal length and high focal ratio ie a 200mm SCT has a fl of 2000mm and is f10.

Ideal for lunary and planetary but needs additional optics (reducers) to work effectively on DSO.

They were the favorite amateur scope in the mid 70 -80, then overtaken by the Dobbie for visual work and the new generation of small ED refractors for imaging.

The LX55/75 mount is not highly regarded when compared with the HEQ5 or NEQ6 Skywatcher mounts.

Hope this helps.
