Going with DSLR and

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys/Gals

Registered yesterday and with so much friendly help am going to start my Celestial journey with recommended gear...i.e..

My Own DSLR Nikon D50

recommended gear ( I will purchase the below as stated) , need to google lowest price.

Astrotrac TT320X-AG

Manfrotta 410 Junior geared head

and i know will need some basics to fit

I am looking at this Tripod from Manfrotta

Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod Legs Only - Black

Its not a bad price and do folks think it is OK for my DSLR starter set up ?

The polarscope will be the Astrotrac variety but "hey" Rome wasn`t built in a day

Thanks in advance Paul

I am no expert on imaging but I have heard good things about the astrotrac for portability I assume that is your main reason for choosing it I assume you will need a wedge for it. if portabilty is not an issue then an eq mount would be cheaper. I would also suggest a copy of this first Books - Making Every Photon Count - Steve Richards it would help you on your way no end

IIRC The geared head can used for polar alignment - the wedge is an upgrade if you want to use larger scopes or lenses....

I think the Geared head is fitted between the tripod and the Astrotrac and a B&S head normally used to attach the camera to the Astrotrac...

I didnt need the ultimate in portability so went for an EQ3 Pro instead...

It was the First DSLR I bought having taken a break from Photography until Digital got affordable and to the quality I was after... I did bridge the gap using some digis from work which were out of my budget...

A month After the D50 I bought the D200 as I was happy with the results from the D50 just wanted something more robust as my cameras used to go up clifs and down caves...

I will have to read up ... I am wondering if there's a way I can lash together a cheap timer remote and IR transmitter ...

Re triggering the camera, Shoestring Astronomy do a USB trigger (using USB interface + IR LED). I looked into making my own timer release but ran out of intelligence and gave up. (I have a D70).

But to get the best ("mode 3" + timer) out of it, you'll need one of these:

By Mode 3, we mean bypassing all noise reduction filters, producing true raw images. I find the intervalometer a godsend, having got fed up of timing every sub!

But in this day and age of money making and improvement , It does not mean its a crappo camera as well as you know...Its a cracking little SLR

Can't agree more, my D50 is still nearly as good as it was when I bought it. Yes, newer camera may give better results, but that does not make the D50 bad. In fact the lower pixel count of a D50 helps to hide tracking and focus error.

Cannot find purchase info for that model via link.

Yeah, it's a very home-made affair (it is after all a very specialised device!) You would need to email Javier if you're interested. Cost me $80 + shipping.
