2" or not 2" that is the question.

Recommended Posts

I am happy with my 8"SCT and I think I might fit a new diagonal. The

Revelation Quartz Dielectric Diagonal SCT

The problem is that will make me want a 2" EP..... now lets talk inexpensive here please.

What EP say from the choice for argument sake is

26mm - 70 Degree field 5 Element * 30mm - 70 Degree field 5 Element

* 42mm - 65 Degree field 5 Element

* 50mm - 55 Degree field 5 Element

Which would be the best first 2" EP to match my f10 SCT for DSO work?

Thanks

Mike

I went down this route when I had a C8 SCT. 1st thing is to check that the 2" diagonal will not hit the mount when the scope is ponting towards the zenith - mine was on a Celestron fork mount and was OK but I'm not sure what the clearance is with the Nexstar base.

I went for a William Optics clone 2" dielectric diagonal with the SCT screw fit and a Rigel 38mm 70 degree FoV eyepiece. The views were good but it did upset the balance of the scope as it's a lot of weight on the back of the scope - the DEC drive had to work pretty hard.

The disadvantage was that I found that I could not use the F/6.3 reducer any more.

At 2000mm focal length the best eyepiece would be a 22mm Nagler, but, as you say inexpensive, a 26mm Panaview @ £75 or 30mm Aero @ £127.

If you go for less magnification you'll run into contrast problems, with a lighter background at lower powers. I find around x90 to be a good balance between wide field and dark background hence the 22mm suggestion.
