Hiya Joselin

It's difficult to tell from those pictures without further explanation about which is which.

I tend to play with the levels first to set the dynamic range of the image (i.e. set the black and white points of the image). Here's a non-astro based tutorial which explains the principles;

Using the Photoshop Levels Tool

Then once you've got the black and white points correct, you can play with the colour balance and midtone contrast with curves.

Using the Photoshop Curves Tool

These tutorials are for Photoshop but I'm sure GIMP is similar. You can adjust b&w points using curves if you like but I tend to keep them as seperate adjustments.
