If i was to Advise someone today i would say get both a Telescope and a Pair of Binos, use the bino's to learn a part of the sky and then use your scope around the learned area. Also i would say it doesn't matter if you dont know the other parts yet go and take a look anyway but try and remember the brightest of stars.

Life is too short but dont let it be a struggle Imho..
