Fine tuning my LCD display

I've been having a play around with the settings on my display and would like to know what people use to accurately setup their systems.

I have used a website with colour bars and B/W bars for contrast and I've had a fiddle with the gamma control, brightness and contrast on my graphics card.

The trouble is that now I've done these mods the display seems way brighter than it did before, even though I have actually turned the brightness control down on the monitor itself.

Any help in confirming what I've done is correct would be gratefully received.

I think it's a bit of an overkill for me just making sure that what I'm seeing on my monitor from you imaging types is faithfully shown on my screen

I use the Spyder 2 Pro and it's made a huge difference for me.

Spyder 3 pro for me, all my monitors at home and at work are all calibrated with it.

colour munki is another matches up my screens and printer rather well...

if its just for screen try wincolour..
