Solar Activity 01 May

May Day - but no sun until the afternoon, when thinning cloud eventually allowed observation.

The "unnumbered" area of activity appearing at the north east limb is extensive & contains small spots visible in white light:

Sun-100501-1424-Ha-ARNE-X2.jpg

1424 UT. Solarscope 60, 2x barlow, DMK21

Sun-100501-1444-WL-ARNE-FLTX2.jpg

1444 UT. WO FLT 110, Lunt solar wedge, Baader solar continuum filter, 2x barlow, DMK21

Sun-100501-1455-CaK-ARNE-FLTX2.jpg

1455 UT. WO FLT 110, Lunt B1200 CaK diagonal, 2x barlow, DMK21

But yesterday's new AR in the north east - now numbered 11064 - is declining

Sun-100501-1426-Ha-AR1064-X2.jpg

1426 UT. Solarscope 60, x2 barlow, DMK21

Sun-100501-1442-WL-AR1064-FLTX2.jpg

1442 UT. WO FLT 110, Lunt solar wedge, Baader solar continuum filter, 2x barlow, DMK21

Sun-100501-1451-CaK-AR1064-FLTX2.jpg

1451 UT. WO FLT 110, Lunt B1200 CaK diagonal, 2x barlow, DMK21

The group of filaments near the meridian in the south is still interesting, though the "slash" has lost the definition it had yesterday:

Sun-100501-1428-Ha-filaSC-X2.jpg

1428 UT. Solarscope 60, x2 barlow, DMK21

The CaK overview shows a small bright plage in the SE

Sun-100501-1413-CaK.jpg

1413 UT. Coronado PST CaK, prime focus, DMK41

which in Ha has the appearance of a new active area about to burst into life

Sun-100501-1423-Ha-plageSE-X2.jpg

1423 UT. Solarscope 60, x2 barlow, DMK21

Prominences are interesting rather than notable, the brightest apparently associated with the activity near the north east limb.

Sun-100501-1432-Ha-promNE-X2.jpg

1432 UT. Solarscope 60, x2 barlow, DMK21

Transparency moderate improving to good, thinning high cloud. Seeing moderate, tending to deteriorate slowly. Temp 11C, wind N force 1-2, occasionally 3.

Glad somebody got some imaging done

The cak stuff looks great

When I had access to the garden the sun had crept behind the haze so I had a couple of sweeps around and noted a couple of proms but was struggling with "surface" detail

But tomorrow I hope will give me a chance to practice

Steve
