Can anyone please tell me what the distance is between the cmos chip and the front edge of the camera body (ie the bayonet plate) on a Canon 1000D?

Hi Pete,

Look at the top of your camera, and engraved on the left hand

side is a circle with a line going through it. That is the standard mark on most SLRs and DSLRs for the film/sensor plane.

I believe the distance is 55mm from the front mounting face to the CCD surface.

From the front of an EOS T-mount to the FP will be 55mm

I've posted a link many times to a wikipedia article which lists the info for just about every camera/lens mount out there but cant find it at the moment...

Found a more comprehensive list now instead...

For the EOS its 44.0 mm

The correct flange-to-focal-plane distance for all Canon EOS cameras is 44.0mm.
