Hi all

Ive just brought the Skywatcher explorer-130P Auto Tracking telescope. Im new to this but it says that with the Eyepieces Supplied (1.25"): 10mm & 25mm and the x2 Barlow Lens you are able to get Magnifications of x26, x52, x65, x130 and possibly x260. Ive tried but with no success. Can anyone advise. Would be most greatfull

Cheers

Julian

Hi Julian, welcome to SGL

X260 is not possible with the eyepieces supplied, the others shouldn't be a problem. I think you maybe mis-understanding the spec of the scope which describes it as having a highest practical mag of x260. This is a guide so that you know how high it can go should you buy an eyepiece that will achieve this, which in this case would be 2.5mm.

Hi Julian and welcome to the group - The rings on saturn are a bit closed up right now but in the process of opening over the next few months - so it will get better.

Although the highest practical magnification is quoted for your scope - most people work a bit below the max for better views - as yours is x260 I'd work around 220 ish max. Try initially just using the 25mm - then swop in the 10mm for a comparison - then slip the barlow in and repeat with the other two - you'll soon get a feel for the type of magnifications you're happy with.

Have fun :)

Hi and welcome to SGL, Julian. :) Keep trying for Saturn. Begin at the lowest magnification and slowly increase it, and you'll eventually be able to see the rings. And be sure to turn the focus knob very slowly so you don't bypass the correct focus.
