Nikon and DSS

Recommended Posts

Hi, fairly new to all this and just stepping out. I'm currently trying to do a little bit of Stacking in DSS. One observation is DSS sees the files from my Nikon D40 (.nef) as gray 16 bit is this right? If I convert the files first using UFraw for instance then they are now listed as RGB, I've also tried some other (non D40) .nef files and they are treated the same.

DSS screenshot attached...hopefully

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Cider,

Yes, correct, they show as Gray. It's all to do with debayering. Don't ask me to get all technical but if you mess with the Raws first it can smear hot pixels and cause some artifacts. Just drop them into DSS and let it do it's work.

( I won't get technical coz I'm thick about things like this :) )

Hi CiderBiker,

Deep Sky Stacker works very well with my Nikon NEF files. I usually need to increase saturation after stacking to see much colour, but I'm really pleased with how they "usually" turn out.
