Video with Canon 500d

I may be the lucky recipient of a Canon 500D from Santa.

I know it is a good camera, but wondered about the usefulness of the video function for lunar/planetary photography. Has anyone tried this? Theoretically, as it can take 10-30fps, I can't think why the output couldn't be stacked in registax and then processed. Just thinking of a couple of minutes at 10fps, giving 1200 frames to play with.

Anyone know what format the video output is in and tried this?
