Effects of collimation?

Does bad collimation effect higher mags than lower mags, or effects it the same all round?

It affects all magnifications, but perfect collimation will allow you to get better views when you use higher magnification, assuming seeing conditions are good.

Even slight miscollimation will affect planetary images, making them slightly soft. A perfectly collimated sct with decent optics and an excellent eyepiece can produce very good planetary images. My best ever Jupiter view was with a 1985 Celestron SPC8,fantastic fine detail in the equatorial bands.

2 years ago my C8 showed up to 9 bands on Jupiter and the crepe ring on saturn easily in decent seeing.

so it is worth taking time to get it spot on.
