Xmas LED lights for Observatory?

I was in Tesco this morning and they have a range of battery powered (2x AA cells) LED light strings. These come in various sets. I wondered if they would be any use as Observatory "general" lighting eg for looking at maps & books etc?

They seem to be mainly white LED's with a coloured soft plastic "Xmas shape" pushed on to them but one set was definately made from red LED's. Pricewise they are either £5 or £10, depending on the number of lights etc. I reckon that with rechargeable batteries and not much "on" time they should last quite well.

Any comments?

I have a similar set... 10 leds on a string run by 2x AA batteries. - I used them to iluminate the eyepiece board i put in the obs. - Great to light them up so i can see which one i want (out of the choice of 4!)

They also give enough of a glow to look at the printed maps i take out to use.

Hope that helps.
