Earth's orbit is an ellipse, not a circle, which means the Earth-sun distance varies throughout the year. On July 3rd and 4th, Earth will be at "aphelion," the most distant point in its orbit. Around this time, the sun actually looks a little smaller, and sunlight is less intense. But don't expect any relief from the heat...

Not true! I went to school in Wisconsin, 160 km east of Minneapolis, so I know what cold is. Toronto's balmy by comparison. :D
