Combed histograms

Can anyone help please? I'm taking shots with the SXVF H9 or the ATiK 16ic (with the ZS66), using astroart and the artemis software respectively, and then stacking in DSS. All looks Ok until I load in PS, and then the histogram isn't smooth, but combed Any idea what might be causing this? Its meaning I can't do much stretching before it goes blotchy . And its odd that its the same using different capture software and different versions of PS. The only common factor is DSS - have I got a setting wrong somewhere?

Usually if it does that it means the image is an 8 bit image. Check the settings and make sure it's saved as a 16bit image.

Thanks! DSS seems abit temperamental - sometimes it saves as combed sometimes not, and I'm always choosing 16bit. The autosave file seems fine, so I'll just run with that!
