Dob Imaging

Guys,

I was musing about imaging with a dob. The problem seems to be that the image gradually rotates with the stars, but your camera doesn't! Has anybody tried creating a motorized t ring widget that rotates the camera once every 24 hours to synchronize with the stars' rotation?

Would it work?

It's called field rotation and it occurs in all Alt/Az telescopes. You will also need to drive your dob as well, so it tracks the stars at the correct rate.

This can be done by either driving your dob via a powered ground board or an equitorial mount.

AP with a dob is not impossible but it's hard compared to a GEM.

If you have a big Dob a tracking platform is the usual way around the problem.

There are field de-rotators that can be used with the camera, just be sure you're sitting down when you see the price.
