Hello from Copenhagen, Denmark + "Accept Cookies issue"

Travelman

Recommended Posts

After years on CN & Astromart + the danish astronet.dk, I guess it´s high time I get more active here...especially asI am now travelling to the UK more frequently.

Being 58, but out of "business" for 20 years, I have bounced back over the last to year....having rebuilt my telescope collection and started observing again.

Looking forward to be part of this community.

"Accept cookies issue"

I keep getting the "Accept Cookies" "option", but when I accept, the "option" pops up again. (I am using Firefox)

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Hi @Travelman and welcome to SGL. :hello2:

BTW… I also get the ‘accept cookies’ issue. I am not too worried about it as I use DuckDuckGo. The developers say it clears cookies, cache, trackers, etc., upon exiting the app. The DuckDuckGo email service is pretty good too! :duckie:

Hello Travelman and welcome. If travelling to the UK, you'll probably find we have more light pollution that you're used to at home.

Hi Tony

True...in the sense that if I (attempt) to observe from within the very city center of Copenhagen, then the level of light polution is on par with the all of the greater London area. Since Copenhagen is a LOT smaller than London area-wise, it doesn´t take much effort got get at least one better on better on the Bortle Scale.

I am in the outskirts of Copenhagen, and luckily my balcony faces SSW - towards the straight between Denmark and Sweden, so for planets I am fine....as well as Deep Sky Astrophotogry (obviously with filters).

That said.....I have actually seen some deep-sky objects from the Round Tower in Copenhagen. This tower has an interesting history....altought it´s part of the Church of Trinitatis, it never served as a Church tower, but was specifically built by Christian IV as an Observatory for the University of Copenhagen and was inaugurated as such at 1642 (but got it´s first telescope on

Fun facts:

Jean Picard visited the observatory in 1671 - although is actual purpose was to establish the actuel precise georgaphical location of Tycho Braha´s old observatoy at the island of Hveen (located in the straight between Denmark and Sweden, which he visited together with Ole Rømer - who then became Picard´s assistant from 1672 until 1681

Ole Rømer was became the Director of the observatoy in 1685 - but his famous discovery of the speed of light was done in paris in 1676.

Although the it losts it´s status as observatoy of the University of Copenhagen in 1861,  it continued as a observatoty nonetheless, and is still active today, but with 6" Mertz which were installed in 1929.  It is claimed to be the oldest, still active, observatory in the world. (Paris established 1671 and Greenwich 1675)

Good morning Torben,

Thanks for that very informative response including so much that I didn't know! My knowledge of Copenhagen is limited to your nice airport and my experience of the wider Denmark is limited to an oil refinery / storage port at Fredericia, your efficient and clean railway systems and a manufacturer of food factories' cleaning equipment in Aarhus. There are obvious benefits to having a much lower population density than we have in England but of course many people wish to live near all the urban facilities so cities grow whilst rural dwelling people gradually disappear.

My house did have green fields to the south, east and north when we bought it in 2017. In just 7 years, so much new housing has been built that it has houses in all those directions so I am totally surrounded. To view or image anything below an altitude of 15º-20º, I have to go somewhere else. That means I no longer use my 254mm Dobsonian and even moving the 150mm reflector with its HEQ5 mount is becoming an issue because of my age. That is why I have bought a lighter, portable rig including the ZWO AM3 mount and an 80mm f/6.25 refractor and an imaging camera but I'm still getting used to that bundle so I can't say it's a successful purchase - time will tell but at least I should be ready for the August 21st Lunar Occultation and to capture Comet A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) if it survives perihelion.

Clear skies,

Tony

Welcome to SGL Torben!

Regarding the cookies issue, You could check your browser privacy settings and see if you have it set to delete cookies on closing the browser/after a set time? I don't use firefox, but I assume it has the same settings as other browsers.

Hi Harry.

Thanks a lot for the reply I highly appreaciated

Unfortunately the problem vanished w/o me doig anything.

I once complained aboutr a strange noice from at A/C unit at a building just opposite my bedroom window. After spending hours on tracking down who was responsible for the maintenance and even pursuading home to call a technician....when the technician showed the next afternoon - the noice had dissapeared.......

Of course Torban - I prefer Tuborg to Carlsberg but I'm not a lager fan. I'm a person who likes what we call Real Ale - it offers a variety of flavours whereas both the above are very heavily controlled to make the same flavour.

Clear skies (tonight looks possible here),

Welcome to SGL from central Sardinia! When you are an amateur astronomer you are forever, you did a great job starting over!

Thanks Gonariu...thanks for the words.

10 years ago I went thru very difficult times...and had to sell all my equipment (Takahashi, Questar, Celestron and Canon).....only scope I didnt sell was my Edmund Astroscan.

Starting again was not difficult.....but re-acquiring equipment was not cheap though😉

The important thing now is that that difficult moment is over and that for you it is just a bad memory. I saw the Edmund Astroscan advertised in astronomy magazines from the 80s, it must be a nice instrument.

It sure is....IF you use it for its intended purpose...WIde Field.

Last year I had is cleaned and colimated but Scientifics Online (1 of the 2 companies that Edmund Scientitics was split into).....the cost was a mere USD 75 (+shipping). I also opted to get a Red Dot finder (factory-)installed at the same time.

Interestingly, the "part" that Edmunds Scientifc was split into is Edmund Optics, and to this day, they still manufacture the original RKE eyepieces.

You are right about the past, however I actually enjoy my scopes even more now, after all I have acquired them twice now 😊

Clear skies!

Hej Torben

I live in exile on SW Fyn as an olde englænder and have a family member in central Kbh.
A lovely city. I visited there quite recently.

I am afraid I have never mixed in the Danish astro amateur circles.

I live out in the countryside and am surrounded in fields and empty houses.

Your English is excellent. Probably far better than my dansk. 😉

Welcome aboard!

About danish, I use to tell my english speaking friends that danish is very easy:  Fjernsyn = Television and Køleskab = Refrigerator

Have you ever watched "The Julekalender"?

Feel free to hit my up next time you visiting Copenhagen
