ESO 456-78 a globular cluster in Sagittarius

For some bizarre reason, despite being fairly bright at 11th magnitude ESO 456-78 is very rarely observed. I wonder why?  wink.gif

It lies in a very dense part of the Milky Way and there is immense confusion from the closely packed foreground and/or brighter stars.

Here is my attempt. See the ball of stars very slightly left of centre? That is the dense nucleus of the GC. The other members are all over the image.

I urge others to give it a try now that Sgr is well placed again. Who knows, you may well find other and easier globulars nearby.

Yikes! Looking at that frazzles my eyes! I think its a macro photo of 60 grit sandpaper?

Not much about this object to be found with a quick search. Just your post on CN :)

The only thing that really matters to me is it's declination. Having just looked it up with HNSky planetarium, it culminates at 7.6 deg alt, So I'd have to take down a few rows of garden fence, demolish a few houses to my south and arrange for the lights along the nearby trunk road to turned off.

Obviously, the hard bit is the clear sky...

Nice to see these obscure but fascinating targets get some attention.

If I hadn't seen the title my first thought would have been solar granulation ! 🌞
