What I found is once you start guiding other factors start to show themselves.

to me it looks like focus may be ever so slightly soft - and it makes a big difference, the extra contrast helps capturing the detail wispy stuff ...

Addy sent. I used Neat Image on this, maybe I shouldn't have. It made it too soft.

Nice result Robin. I've not tried Neat Image, I use noise ninja, although I suspect the controls are very similar, see if you can't hammer the background into submission with it, but use a selection to protect the galaxies, then invert the selection and process them much more gently.
