Leisure Battery Issue

Recommended Posts

I'm currently using a 12v 32ah leisure battery to power my mobile setup. I've installed it in a box, connected an inline fuse to 2 x car type power outputs, a USB3 socket and a voltage display.

The battery is kept on constant trickle charge using a CTEK MXS 5.0 Battery Charger and shows in the region of 12.4 volts when first switched on. To this I'm connecting a NEQ6 Mount, 2 x small dew heaters and a ZWO ASIPLUS. The plus has a ZWO ASI294 main camera, a ASI120 mini guide camera, an EFW and an EAF attached.

The issue i'm having is that the ASI keeps showing a low power alert and on checking its often registering down to 10.8 volts, way below what i expect to see. Looking at similar setups the battery should easily be able to cope with the load.

Any thoughts as to why i'm seeing this issue.

You do not say whether the battery is ‘new’ or has had some earlier use. The voltages you mention are not those of a healthy lead acid battery, deep cycle, leisure or AGM type. It sounds like those of a battery that has had some earlier life! The fully charged voltage (at the terminals) should be at least 13V and after use you should never allow it to drop below 12.4V (again at the terminals) or you risk permanently damaging it. With a healthy 32AH battery this would occur when you have drawn about half the charge, ie 16AH. The ‘at the terminal’ measurement is to make certain that your wiring harness is not dropping significant voltage while the battery is delivering current.
