Moon Observing Maps/Books

I rely on my "Clementine Atlas of the Moon"  (out of print, but used copies are available).  Section map on one page, plain photo from lunar orbit on the opposite.  But it's more a desk reference unless I copy pages for use outside.  Outside I use the Charles Wood spiral bound atlas.

Another thing I want to try is printing screen grabs from Virtual Moon Atlas 7.0 and then putting them into clear plastic sleeves I can mark up with a grease pencil or Sharpie or something.  That way I can just check off lunar features on the map and identify / log them later.  And it would be no loss if any sheets got lost / damaged.

Many rate "Atlas of the Moon" by Antonin RUKL quite highly, but it is increasingly difficult to get hold of now and the plates are based on drawings - excellent drawings - but drawings nevertheless:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Atlas-Moon-Antonin-Rukl/dp/0600571904/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1GLDKC3V6V4A&keywords=atlas+of+the+moon&qid=1672757277&sprefix=atlas+of+the+moon%2Caps%2C94&sr=8-3

This is a photographic atlas- again hard to get hold of and again at what some may consider daft prices. The plates are based on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) photos, and includes details on specific areas within each plate - interesting but not particularly useful at the eyepiece.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/21st-Century-Atlas-Moon-Charles/dp/1938228804/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1MQ4FHTHDEBQ5&keywords=moon+atlas&qid=1672757052&sprefix=moon+atlas%2Caps%2C100&sr=8-4

This is the best of the bunch I think - it is in German, but the plates excellent (based again on LRO images) and the features have the same names (surprise!). Again hard to get hold of but I found this:

And this is an updated version of the last one, looks like it is in English, but not cheap:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Duplex-Moon-Atlas-Generation-Lunar/dp/3949370056/ref=sr_1_1?crid=VLIIQYW8KWCP&keywords=duplex+moon+atlas&qid=1672757079&sprefix=duplex+moon%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-1

The last two, Buch Reiseatlas Mond and Duplex Moon Atlas are on laminated paper so can be used in the damp night air, the 21st Century Atlas is on shiny gloss paper, but I suspect not up to too much dampness and the RUKL one is on normal paper, so best read in front of the fire with a cup of tea.

I think that The Hatfield Lunar Atlas by Anthony Cook is a great book, combination of photos and detailed maps and packed with useful info for the lunar observer. It was initially published in 1968 but completely updated in 98 and then digitally remastered in 2012. Published by Springer. A lovely book.

Many thanks for posting this Garry.  I'd never heard of the Duplex Lunar Atlas, though it hasn't been available for long.  It looks very good, but I've not been able to find a review anywhere.  It looks very tempting.

Thanks, Paul

Not book/paper...

Android OS and iOS app's too. I use the following...

Available for MS-Windows, MacOS and Linux PC's/Laptops...

note: VMA v7.0 or higher is not compatible with newer versions of MacOS and/or Linux because of incompatibilities with OpenGL.

Sky & Telescope produce a foldable, laminated Moon map that is really very good. Depending on the type of telescope you use, you can choose a standard telescopic view version, or if your scope uses a star diagonal, you can choose a erect image but reversed version.
