Good refractor for Baader 2inch Cool-ceramic Herschel Wedge

Recommended Posts

I am using my 2 inch Baader Herschel with my William Optics Zenithstar 61.

There is not enough infocus to use my DSLR with just the 2inch snout adapter so I have taken some photos with my phone.

Very pleased with how well the wedge performs.

I am however thinking of upgrading the scope I use,  a bit more aperture and hopefully with a better infocus range, (I only need around another 20mm at most).

What are others using with the Baader wedge.

  • fifeskies changed the title to Good refractor for Baader 2inch Cool-ceramic Herschel Wedge

Nice setup @fifeskies, I don’t think you are in danger of being under mounted there :)

I most often use an FC100DC with my Baader Coolwedge, and always use binoviewers too. It gives fantastic results (obviously seeing dependent as always) whilst still being very much a grab and go, one hand lift for this lot.

(Bunting was from my daughter’s birthday party, I wasn’t at a fête!)

You know that Stu loves his white light setup when he brings it out after sunset for a photoshoot!

Getting back to topic, I have used a 2" Lacerta wedge with my 102mm TecnoSky G7 APO with great results. Granulation is easily visible and there's a great amount of detail to be found in active regions, seeing permitted.

The sunspot images are captured with my OnePlus 7 Pro phone handheld.

Tee hee! I often leave the Tak out all day, then pop a diagonal in to look at the Moon when it rises, or some other Astro target. I’ve found Solar viewing after sunset unrewarding for some reason 🤪🤣

I use my Herschel wedge with my skywatcher st120 and this gives great views.

all in all a very affordable solar setup

Is that a 1.25 wedge on the ST120.

Looks like it has used up most of the in-focus so I doubt that the longer path needed by the 2inch Coolceramic will allow it to obtain focus in an ST120 , unless anyone knows for sure that it does.

Nice little solar setup all the same

Just a note , I would remove the Telrad when looking at the sun , you can melt the target screen if the sun is high and strong and you accidently pass the strong sun across the top when aligning the mount , the little lens inside it can focus back into the Telrad

I would recommend a longer focal length achro or an apo for white light solar. They give better correction for spherical abberation which helps bring out the fine detail in granulation. I have a Celestron Omni 120XLT f8.3 which gives excellent results for not a lot of cash.

Point taken about the telrad I didn’t even think of that to be honest.. thanks 🙏
