Casatus and Sinus Iridum 13/01/2022

Hi all,

Last night I made a quick dash to the obsy to look at The Moon. I was hopping to get Gassendi, which is one of my favorite targets, but it was too close to the terminus. Instead I wandered around for a while and the two views that appealed me the most were Casatus (showing a quite dramatic shade crossing half of the crater) at the South:

And the whole Sinus Iridum at the North, with Promontorium Laplace standing out nicely, located at the northeast of the bay and also projecting a mighty shade, as a result of being 2600 meters high (according to wikipedia) :

In retrospective, I was very lucky to get these pictures, because a couple hours later a very thick layer of calima (a dust haze that comes from the Sahara desert) started to arrive and now you can barely see beyond a few hundred meters away :-(.

The gear:

  • Celestron CPC 800 GPS XLT
  • GSO dielectric mirror diagonal
  • GSO 2.5x barlow lens
  • Optolong IR685
  • Risingcam GPCMOS02000KMA (Sony IMX290 mono)

The software:

  • ToupSky
  • Autostakkert
  • RegiStax
  • The Gimp

Thanks for looking,

NV
