Hello "Chazbear," and welcome to SGL!

I've owned a Tal 100RS (the newer version of the TAL100R.

As "Doc" says, it is an excellent scope for Moon, Planets and some clusters. Magnification can go up to 200 safely. Perhaps 250 on a clear night. Regarding colour abberations - I only noticed that the TAL showed a little more of a pale (and I mean very pale!) hint of yellowing to my other scopes.

I believe on the 100RS, the focuser has been improved and length of dew shield on front.

If you are thinking about a Refractor, it might be worth considering an "Apo" scope, as the tubes are shorter and more manageable. Also, the optics may be better than the TAL.

Best wishes on your final choice anyway.

Regards,

Hello and welcome to SGL chazbear :(.

I recently sold my TAL100R to another member here and was sad to see it go tbh, lovely scope that had great optics with little false colour.

The usual rule for maximum magnification (conditions permitting) of 2x the aperture in millimetres means that theortically you can go to x200 but most nights x150 - x170 would be your useable maximum.

One thing you may want to take into account (and Phil has mentioned) is there's two version of the TAL100. The older TAL100R apparently has problems with some eyepieces reaching focus (I never had this problem) while the newer TAL100RS overcomes this problem and has superior baffling.

Tony..
