Stellarium symbols

Recommended Posts

I've had a good look for this, but I can't find the answer.

There must be a meaning to the various symbols used for the deep sky objects, but it doesn't always seem to follow a set pattern....

So,

The little green circles with the spikes at NSEW are nebulae.

The circles of yellow dots are clusters*

The solid circles with a cross inside are also clusters*

The green squares are HII regions (except when they aren't)?

The red ellipses are galaxies.

Is the above mainly correct or is there something I'm missing?  *I especially want to know what is the difference between the two symbols for clusters.  EDIT  Ah, globular and open!?

We followed standard legend from atlases :)

And you made a lovely job of it, thank you.  :)  I'd be lost without that software, but as a newbie,  I'd never used an astronomy atlas and so was a bit stuck
