NGC 4312

Rodd

Recommended Posts

This galaxy is usually overshadowed by its optically nearby sibling--M100.  I imaged the pair, along with numerous fuzzies, with the TOA 130.  I noticed NGC 4312 came out pretty detailed and balanced.  So I decided to crop it out and enlarge for this stand alone LRGB image.  Another example of hunting the feared small galaxy with a 5" refractor.  Under dark, steady skies it would no doubt look pretty amazing.  As is it at least respectable.

TOA 130 native and ASI 1600 L: 96 300sec; R: 42 300sec; G: 22 300sec; B: 49 300 sec (17.4 hours)

Lovely. Just how small is it?

Thanks Wim. I guess it’s not all that small. It’s much smaller than M100.  Have a look at a wide field image of M100 and you can’t miss it.

17.4 hours! How many sessions?

I really tip my hat to all of you dedicated astrophotographers. The effort you put into this clearly shows in your images!

Thanks maw.   I usually need 2 nights per RGB channel and 3-4 for lum.  But there are usually lost sessions where clouds rolled in or wind or whatever. I really wish I had clearer skies. For every clear night I get almost a week of clouds

Very nice Rodd! Maybe you could post the whole image here also - would be interesting.

Here ya go.  I think with a large aperture this galaxy would make an excellent target.
