Solar Halo

I saw this halo around the sun earlier. Having seen one a few weeks ago it is as if once you've seen one you notice them all of a sudden. I pointed it out to the people I was with but no one else could see it no matter that I explained exactly where it was!

There are plenty of atmospheric phenomena of various sorts. Most people do not look up and most people have no idea about any phenomena at all. When I joined my astro society as a teen back in the 70s, there were people there who specialised in photographing all sorts of phenomena, such as the green flash. So I was introduced to it at an early age. I always enjoy ski trips as up in the mountains you see phenomena that are rarely seen elsewhere.

The halos are caused by sunlight diffracted by ice crystals suspended in the Ionosphere.     🙂
