Binoviewing for solar - white light and Quark

Recommended Posts

Just trying to get a hang of it, does polarization of the binoviewers impair solar observation? Should magnification/focal length of the EPs be adjusted down just like for night-time?

Case in point, I normally use 32mm plossl with my Quark, 40mm for bad seeing. Should I get the second 40mm or 32mm, is light fall-off in Ha-alpha significant? Likewise for white light, is the image much dimmer or should I stick to my usual mag as the sun is pretty bright to start with?

I haven't found it to be too much of a problem in terms of dimming. You will likely have to adjust your positioning of the BV'ers due to back focus depending on the scope you are using. As you can see from the attached I use my Tele Vue BV's with my (then) Lunt 60mm Ha and (now) Lunt 80mm Ha without a problem, though I am having to use the 2x amplifier that came with them, and the TV's take up 130mm of back focus which is pretty long for a BV.  Those are 24mm Panoptics in it. With the 2x amplifier that cuts them down to 12mm EP's from 24...

White light should be no problem, the image is plenty bright enough in my 4”, if anything I could add a polarising filter to knock it back a bit but don’t do that normally. Stick with whichever mag works best for you.

I think the same will apply to the Quark to be honest. I binoview with my PST mod and it works well, although like all Solar viewing it benefits from a good over the head to cut out glare and improve contrast. I assume that the Quark will focus with binoviewers without needing an additional Barlow as it already has a x4.2 Barlow in it so should allow plenty of back focus.
