Mars - 2020

Hi all,

Would it be possible to advise what the best time of year is to view Mars please? It is viewable in the mornings currently but very low in the sky and positioned at the front of my house. ideally I am interested to know if it will be positioned to the South West later in the year for observing. I am yet to see this planet.

There was a thread anticipating the 2020 martian opposition last year that might be of interest Barry:

Its going to be a little higher than the last one but Mars disk a little smaller. I'll take higher and smaller happily I think - it was so low last time that I had to observe between houses !

Ahh thanks John, I did look back through the thread but didn't seem to have any joy finding any on Mars for this year.

I will have a read through the above.

This chart shows how Mars will be, from 51 degrees N, over the next year and a half or so. I.E. we'll have to wait until the first half of 2021 before it gets "good". "Size" in in arcminutes.

Barry through August if you're desperate, staying up late/rising very early around 3am Mars will be passing across the southern sky, rising progressively earlier, reaching opposition mid October.
