Thanks for the headsup. Am I just noticing them more or are there a vast number of brightish supernovae around this year?

Not sure really. There do seem to be quite a few, but then I haven't been paying as much attention to the Latest Supernovae page in recent years. Looking at my logs, I spotted 3 in 2011, 4 in 2012, one each in 2013 and 2014, then nothing for two years (not sure if there were few, clouds intervened, or I was just not paying attention), then one (late) in 2017 and now already 3 in 2018, with another bright one to be had. Poisson statistics do apply in this case, I would say.

In an average year there are about 9 supernovae  that reach brighter than mag 14.   Last year was high (14) but 2016 was low (5)  6 so far this year
