Nightscapes "polluted" by Full Moon

Recommended Posts

Wikipedia's Bortle Scale page says that a Full Moon in a dark location gives you an "effective Bortle number" of around 7, except the sky will be blue rather than greyish-orange.

Well, I am for this fortnight at quite a dark location (21.8) a couple of miles from Baltimore in SW Ireland, and last night (31st March 18, Easter Saturday) was a clear-ish night with a high Full Moon. You can see from these images, taken with Daylight white balance on a Canon EOS6D + Samyang 24/1.4, that the sky at 2140 was very blue!

Exposure in each case was 1 second, ISO 1600, f/1.4 (by contrast, a picture I took of a similar scene in winter 2016 from the same place with no Moon required 45 seconds with the same set-up on otherwise identimcal settings!).

Winter Triangle, Orion, Hyades and Pleiades, looking West towards Baltimore:

... another example from the same night of an example of what a 21.8 Bortle 2-3 place looks like with a full Moon and the odd wispy cloud ... note the Pleiades above Schull mid leftish. The "mountain" with two dots is Mount Gabriel, and the lump to its right is Hungry Hill.

Very nice Magnus. Looks like most of the LP is from houses rather than street lights too. 21.8 skies is what we dream of.
