Stepper motor help

Hi,

I have built the focuser here: https://orlygoingthirty.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/arduino-based-motor-focuser-controller.html  and am using a NEMA17 with a gearbox http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Extruder-Gear-Stepper-Motor-Ratio-3-7-1-Planetary-Gearbox-Nema-17-Step-Motor-New/282174288111?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I have downloaded the standalone moonlight app and it connects OK to the board but when I ask the focuser to move the motor it just sort of judders about, hard to explain!  I am using an external 12v 2.3amp PSU so its not power thats the problem.  I have wired up Blue&Red to M2 and Blue&Black to M1 which according to the ebay page are the 2 coils.  Anybody able to figure out whats wrong?

Couple of things spring to mind...

Double check the wiring between your driver chip & the motor, making sure you have the correct phase & polarity...  btw, which driver are you using the LM293 ??  if so then that may not have enough grunt to drive the nema motor. for that type of motor I'd be more inclined to use an A4988 Pololu etc.

Yeah its an LM293D http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/L293D-Adafruit-Compatible-Motor-Control-Shield-Motor-Driver-for-Arduino-CHIP-27/222012365564?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Do you think thats all it is?  I dont know anything about the polarity of the motor - is there a certain way to connect up the coils?  If so could you look at the ebay link for the motor and tell me what colour goes to what connector on the board as the ebay ad does show the coils and cable colours etc
