I've used an old PIII compaq for the last three winters, I have an old blanket.

So the laptop is generally placed on a wooden chair (with slats to allow air movement), then once I've finished altering stuff on it I lay a blanket over the whole lot (with the screen up). I don't have any problems.

But I've had mine dripping in dew and covered in frost and it's never really complained.

My Toshiba (work) laptop has been outside in the very coldest (-6C) and dewiest (swimming!) weather. So long as you have a way of covering it to protect it from dew, you shoud be fine.
