Sticky AVX mount

I've just been trying to drift align my AVX mount using PHD2. When I use the azimuth bolts the mount seems to be sticking slightly to the aluminium plate on the top of the pier. Having done an initial adjustment in PHD2 the following drift did this:

As you can see it was doing OK until it suddenly jumped.  I'm wondering if there was any resistance to the azimuth bolt that was suddenly released causing the jump.  A bit like tectonic plates causing an earthquake.

Is it necessary to lubricate the underside of the mount so that it moves easily on the pier?
