Welcome Eastern Star, can we have a bit more info please? what scope are you using? When you say "can't focus" do you mean that you see a big bright blob in the eyepiece and you can't bring it to a point, or that the star isn't there when you think you are aligned?

Try the moon first, it's bigger, brighter and much nearer; so makes it easier to find, line up and focus.

As I understand it, you may have not accomplished a good allignment between the finderscope and the scope.

My advice is to use your most "powerful" eyepiece (EP) and point the scope to a tree far away or a rooftop. Then check the image in the EP. After that you should allign the scope so that the crosshair in it will be pointing the same tree or rooftop you see through your EP, which the scope is pointed to.

That's how I have done it a yeear ago with my scope.

There could be several reasons, ranging from a manufacturing fault, to a problem with assembly, to misalignment.

So, what is the make and model of the telescope?

What eyepieces are you trying to use (they should at least have a number written on them, for example 25 or 10)?

Does your telescope have the option to use both 2 inch and 1.25 inch eyepieces?

What are you actually seeing in the eyepiece? If you're not seeing the same as in the finderscope, it's a simple problem of misalignment. If, for example, you look at the Moon and see light but can't focus to any detail, you have another issue etc. So what exactly is the problem? Without more information, I doubt anyone here can help you - but if you can give some more details, I'm pretty certain someone can suggest the solution.
