Replacing Astromaster 130EQ RDF

As I'm sure my fellow AM 130EQ users will testify, Celestron have produced a very good starter telescope package. However, the red dot finder is a constant source of irritation. Therefore, I decided to replace mine with a Telrad based on reading a large number of forum threads and reviews.

I managed to work out how to remove the RDF from the OTA (despite some comments I have read, this is possible) and thought I'd provide a photographic guide for others who decide to take the plunge...

Step 1: locate the two holding screws at the base of the RDF

Step 2: Remove RDF by sliding it towards the rear of the OTA

Step 3: Take Telrad and remove base plate (this will make installation easier) once you have decided on the best location (I've attached mine in line with the position of the original RDF)

Step 4: Once you've chosen the location of your Telrad (I recommend taking some time over this) take base plate and remove the snazzy covers from the impossibly sticky double-sided tape

Step 5: Attach base plate to OTA in desired position and apply firm pressure to make sure it sticks (believe me, it will!)

Step 6: Attach Telrad to base plate

Step 7: Have a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit... :-)

Very worthwhile job.  Whoevever designed the original finder this scope is supplied with could be responsible for frustrating lots of folk........

We've had two visitors at my local club turn up for help in using their Astromaster, best advice is to upgrade to a Telrad / Rigel or a standard RDF.

Regards, Ed.
