Moon Filter Advice Please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

When the Moon is visible (not very much at the mo), it's very bright.

This has got me looking at Moon filters.

Do i need to look at neutral density type ?

I have seen figures like 13% & 25%

Not sure what to look at as the Moon's brightness varies so much.

Then I came across a Antares variable filter 2%-40% which seemed a good idea.

Do you use a variable or fixed filter design.

Paul

Thanks everyone for the replies it really helps when you’re as green as me.

Dandare – point taken thanks.

AstroPhethean – appreciate the offer, I’m not in a position right now to buy. If you have a chance to sell in the mean time then please go ahead if not I’ll keep you in mind.

It makes sense now after reading your replies to opt for a variable filter. If I opt for a fixed filter then I feel it’s going to be too bright or not bright enough. I have found a variable filter with a twin lens design. One lens fits in the diagonal and the other lens fits in the eyepiece, so to adjust the filtering all you have to do is twist the eyepiece for the best view. This sounds like a good system, Antares make one and I’ve seen that Astro Engineering also make one with or without the diagonal. So when I have saved my pennies I now know what I have to choose from. Paul
