trying to open an avi into registax but it keeps saying failed to start avi decompression can any one help.

You could try opening the .avi in VirtualDub and then re-saving it as "old .avi", it works for me a lot of the time when I get that error.

hi same again says couldn't locate decompresser for format 'divx'(divx 4+)

Maybe you are missing the right codec? It does sound like a codec issue....

codec :(this stuff is hard work tryed it in kd3ccd and it says the same but it also says its a divx is that why its not working total novice here.

I have the same problem, I have installed the DMK software - everything seems fine.

Recorded two AVI's (one moon, one Jupiter). I can double click on them and they play - but Registax v4 comes up with failed to start AVI decompression.

I am downloading the Codec files that you suggested Steve - but I'm surprised that the software didn't include the codec.

You have to make sure you have the right Codec on the output. I struggled with this for ages before I twigged what was going on.

I don't have mine to hand and I can't remember where it's set (yeah I know, useless eh?) but I reckon that's the issue.

Yeah the strange thing is the default codec "DV format default" doesn't work in Registax, you need to select Y800 (apparently).

I am running VDub to save the file as an OLD AVI - this apparently works in Registax4.

Time will tell

Converting the file in VDUB to an old AVI format enables registax to open the file.

Now got to learn Registax again

This is a funny one Ant because I used to be able to open the DMK .avis in Registax but after a re-format I had to go through VDub. So its obviously a software problem somewhere and it IS fixable.

According to Cloudynights you need the Y800 codec.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet - clouds came in.

But the first AVI is sorted (not sure if there is a quality loss in the conversion)and stacked, just converting the second AVI now.

Not sure if there was any quality loss - if there was it was minimul.

But what it did do was increase the file size. The Moon AVI was 17 seconds (1009 frames) and c45Mb - after conversion is was a staggering 1GB :shock.

So VDUB works, but make sure you have plenty of HDD space!

http://www.fourcc.org/yuv.php might shed some light on Y800 for you guys. I believe the DV default format depending on what that default is and which particular codec is handling it, will chop the video to 1/2 height which is probably why registax barfs at any video produced like that.
