Just been working on the driver for this so I checked what was up.  Turns out that it doesn't look like the Lodestar has any controls for gain or brightness and the like, just exposure.  At least, the (limited, to be fair) documentation that I have doesn't list anything else.

Ah! sounds obvious now you mention it James

looks like a bit of binning,stretching and exposure are the only options!
