Richard, don't make the filter just 40mm, you need at least 80+mm to be able to resolve the granulation structure. Yes, you will always have ample light for the camera but resolution, resolution, resolution wins the day when you want to image fine structure. Having full aperture filter for those good seeing days is a must, but also an aperture stop to 100mm is very sensible too.

Thanks for the advice. I blue - petered one yesterday with an aperture of 100mm. I Went out on a hazy day and managed a shot which showed sunspots. I was very rushed, so I did not really optimise anything. However, it bears promise for the future.

I did try observing, but the 3.8 film lets through too much light.

More experimenting to come!

Regards

Richard
