HEQ5 giving me the run-around

Not sure whether it's the mount or my game-pad but I had to find The Pacman by eye tonight as the gamepad control was not consistent, sometimes a right nudge would have the same effect as a down nudge, and even when I thought I had the sync star centered in my RDF I do a trial capture, no star, look again and find the mount had slewed away of its own accord.

That Mesu is looking more and more attractive.

have you turned the tracking off for alignment? I do

Ah, no I didn't (I don't think I ever have). That might make a difference. 

I still think I might do a strip down anyway.

I think it will be the usb connection for the gamepad, you could try a electrical switch cleaner, it sorted my xbox pad out when form time to time it went the wrong way, the pc is very stable now after a spray over all the usb connections...
