Bah! The galaxy didn't catch my attention at mag 19, I must admit, but as soon as a new mag 17 popped into sight I thought "Eye Up, looks like a new type 1A, does that". Picked up my daughter's Bushnell 8x30s and there it was, clear as day...

Keep eating the carrots and you can see these with the mk1's :-)

From a suitably dark site and perhaps a few billion ly closer :-)

I admit to being a bit surprised to find GAIA operational, seems like only yesterday that it was being launched, how time flies when you're having fun !

I wonder if the data will fit into Stellarium

It does seem to have been very quiet on the Gaia front, though it seems they have been battling some icing problems with the camera and shrouds. Really looking forward to some new data and a host of new discoveries from this mission - though such a huge amount of data will take years to analyse...

And I think the eventual GAIA database will be a bit too big for my poor laptop

But that's a good point, the link I gave said nothing about what its peak mag. was (or will be !)
